Stamping Out the Virus: Allied Intervention in the Russian Civil War 1918-20

Covers in detail, the attempt by the British, unwilling American and French troops, in suffocating the embryonic stages of Communism (Bolshevism) led by Trotsky and Lenin. A monumental book covering not only Northern Russia (British, French and US), but Southern Russia in the Ukraine where the British sent over 400 advisors and millions of dollars in military equipment to support General Denikin, the White leader. Learn how it was a British manned Mk V tank that caused Russian troops (led by a young Lenin) to evacuate Tsaritsyn (in WW2, known as Stalingrad). The book is well illustrated with great maps and photos, lots of OB's. An excellent research book!

Kursk in Normandy, Operation Goodwood, 1944

Covers in detail (as does the game by the same title) the British operation which has striking similarities to the German operation in Kursk--a huge armor battle involving over 700 AFVs, 80 88mm AT guns in a defense prepared by Rommel in the Caen area in mid-July. Montgomery was frustrated at the slow progress of all Allied forces. His solution was to focus three British tank divisions into the flat area near Caen and ram through what were thought to be weak German defenses. To make sure of victory, the Allied airforce would saturate the whole area in a massive bombing effort. However, like all best laid plans, things went awry early on, Luck (as in Col. Luck, the German officer in charge of the immediate area) was on the German side! He would play a pivotable role in the critical hours on the 18th, one that the British juggernaut would never quite recover from. Like the Kursk on the Eastern Front, it was called off after three days and over 300 tanks had been destroyed by German forces.
